The Warehouse Studios started out in 1894 P. Goldsmith's Sons Co, a sporting goods and baseball glove manufacturer founded by Philip Goldsmith. Goldsmith was one of the earliest entrepreneurs involved in the business side of baseball.
Goldsmith came to the United States in 1861 from Austria at just seventeen years of age with only a few cents in his pockets. P.Goldsmith & Co started in 1875 by making baseballs by hand. A process of wrapping a rubber core with string by hand and stitching on a leather cover. Later Goldsmith would develop a machine that would automate the manufacturing process of stringing a baseball.
By 1885 P.Goldsmith & Co started developing other products and had a national following. The company grew steadily until Philip Goldsmith’s passing in1894. He drowned on a family vacation in Wisconsin.
Goldsmith’s took over the company and moved it across the river to The Warehouse Studios current location, changing the name in 1906 to P. Goldsmith's Sons Co.
Hugo, one of the sons, really shined and grew the list of products P. Goldsmith's Sons Co offered to over 700 sports products. Under his tutelage the company started developing products for baseball, boxing, tennis and football. This stabilized the company’s notoriously seasonal bottom line and grew its business. Hugo also developed multiple patents and moved many sports forward technologically.
Goldsmith's Sons Co bought Draper Maynard in 1936 and Crawford, McGregor & Canby Co in 1937 in the throes of the Great Depression. Crawford, McGregor & Canby Co would later become the well known MacGregor Golf Co.
In 1944 Goldsmith added the MacGregor name to their products and became known as” MacGregor Goldsmith”. In 1952 the Goldsmith name was dropped entirely and the company simply became MacGregor. In 1961 MacGregor became a division of The Brunswick Corporation and in 1967 Brunswick bought them out completely.
Today P Goldsmith Sons operates a vintage sporting goods company out of Cincinnati, Ohio, and offer a wide variety of very high quality vintage sporting goods. Their products range from vintage leather baseballs and gloves of the past to 1930’s soccer boots.
